As per technical terms “PHP (recursive acronym for PHP: Hypertext Preprocessor) is a widely-used open source general-purpose scripting language that is especially suited for web development and can be embedded into HTML.”
or in simple words “The PHP is a server side programming language that allows web developers to create dynamic content that can interact with databases.”
PHP is basically used for developing web based software applications.
PHP is very simple and flexible language ever developed. Instead of running lots of commands to output HTML (as seen in C or Perl), PHP pages contain HTML with embedded code i.e you can place html and PHP code in the same page. The PHP code is enclosed in special start and end processing instructions <?php and ?> that allow you to jump into and out of “PHP mode.”
Below are the main feature of PHP why it so popular-
Features of php
- Open Source
- Case Sensitive
- Platform Independent
To develop a PHP application or website you need a web server like Apache, wamp, xampp etc. where you can write the code, debug and run. A browser where you can output of the pages, a database MySQL. This are the basic needs to start development in PHP.
History of PHP
PHP, as it is known today, is actually the successor to a product named PHP/FI. Created in 1994 by Rasmus Lerdorf, written in the C programming language. Originally used for tracking visits to his online resume, he named the suite of scripts “Personal Home Page Tools,” more frequently referenced as “PHP Tools.” Over time, more functionality was desired, and Rasmus rewrote PHP Tools, producing a much larger and richer implementation. This new model was capable of database interaction and more, providing a framework upon which users could develop simple dynamic web applications such as guestbooks.
After that many versions have released and many features have been added.
PHP 3.0 was the first version of PHP officially released around 1997 and after that many version have been released.
PHP4 – 1998
PHP5 – 2004
